The school-to-prison pipeline, also referred to as the school-prison nexus, is an intentional byproduct of hyper-surveillance and hyper-policing of racially marginalized students and youth. A form of educational inequality, the school-prison nexus results in the incarceration and forced involvement of youth and young adults in the juvenile and criminal legal system. This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of the school-prison nexus and explore contemporary empirical research documenting the complexities and consequences of the school-prison nexus, such as disproportionate disciplinary policies, biased disciplinary actions, and an increase of police in schools. This presentation will also cover recent legal challenges to the school-prison nexus. Furthermore, by discussing the causes and underlying factors of the school-prison nexus, this presentation will discuss prevention instead of penal measures and discuss alternative approaches to justice.
