Section 504 coordinators are often hesitant to de-implement accommodations for fear of being non-compliant with Section 504 regulations. This paper posits that introducing a de-implementation process will improve adherence rates and success of accommodations. The de-implementation process consists of strong data collection and review practices that drive thoughtful decision-making based on the 4 Rs: Remove, Reduce, Restrict, and Replace. (Norton and Chambers, 2020). Consistent district wide application of the methods outlined in this paper can be attained through the professional development of all staff responsible for providing Section 504 accommodations, related aids, and services, such as campus administrators, Section 504 advisors, and teachers.
