In the era of the Great Resignation, school districts are struggling to keep quality certified teachers in classrooms. Teachers working under contract may receive sanctions for leaving their role early, ranging from suspension of their certification to a reprimand. In Texas, public school teachers have strict timelines that govern the times of year in which they can resign their contracts. Recent legislation, however, loosened the restrictions, allowing teachers to leave contracts closer to the start of school. This study reviews Texas law governing contract abandonment, presents data from 2010-2021 of contract abandonment complaints against Texas certified educators, and considers sanctions by type of district and teacher demographics.
