Public School Interrelation and Collaboration with Tribal Council

October 26, 2023 @ 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT

Hear from a school principal about his experience working at a public school with 98% Native American student body and located within a Native American reservation. Public schools with large Native American populations are successful when they actively and deliberately partner with the Native American Tribal communities. The rules and regulations of a school district can greatly vary from the laws of the tribe. Becoming familiar with the Tribal Council’s jurisdiction and laws for both native and non-native students while within the tribe is a vital first step toward ensuring positive relations. One of the most difficult and unclear elements of jurisdiction within the tribal community is who holds jurisdiction of students on and off school property. Within an educational system, it is imperative these jurisdictions, values, and traditions are deeply understood to ensure positive school to tribe relations while adhering to the law. An educational system’s greatest asset and avenue for this is through collaboration with the tribal council.
