In the Spirit of the Law: Transitioning Through Person-Centered Planning

October 26, 2023 @ 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM PDT

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004, when a student with disabilities turns 16, the individualized education planning team must begin planning for the student’s future after secondary school. However, as found in case law, transitional planning does not always meet IDEA’s requirements. Person-centered planning is one evidence-based practice used to involve all members of the planning team to focus on the student’s preferences, interests, needs, and strengths. This presentation will provide an overview of IDEA’s requirements for transition planning, frequent case law violations, and guidance on using person-centered planning activities to avoid such violations and improve student outcomes. Attendees can help advance students’ post-secondary goals by moving from traditional transition planning to more collaborative practices involving all team members.
