Currently, book censorship in public schools has become a hot topic. Parents, staff, community stakeholders, and noted politicians have raised concerns regarding library books, and textbooks which they consider questionable in content. Court decisions like Kennedy v. Bremerton and Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. and statewide bans on social media software have school leaders scratching their heads regarding how to manage First Amendment issues. The Supreme Court’s one decision on point (BOE Island Trees v. Pico, 1982) was so fractured its value to administrators is minimal. In this session, we will identify and share perceptions of principal candidates regarding First Amendment issues they feel present the greatest challenges to their schools. Data will also be shared regarding candidate perceptions regarding their preparedness to handle First Amendment issues, and what additional support, information, or training they need as future principals to equitably administer policy related to First Amendment rights.
