*Our conference is in the City View Room atop The George Washington University's Elliott School, with a sweeping view of Washington, D.C., including the Washington Monument, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Potomac River. Located at 1957 E Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20057, the conference will take place in the heart of Foggy Bottom, with easy access via Farragut West or Foggy Bottom metro stations. Parking is available on the street or under the building (approx. $25 per day). Parking is also available in Marvin Center at H and 21st ($20 per day), 3 blocks away.

8:45 a.m. Welcome, Introductions, Review of the Day Ahead

9:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Session One, Joint Session: Copyright, Intellectual Property, & Education
Knowledge of copyright and other intellectual property is necessary to prevent educators from violating the law! When may you use limited copyrighted material and open educational resources? In addition, this session includes a discussion of current sample policies regarding online course development as well as content and delivery methods for both K-12 and higher education application. This presentation discusses various aspects of intellectual property protection and ownership.

10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Session Two: Concurrent Presentations
Higher Education Focus: Disability
For students with learning disabilities, higher education institutions must address issues of disability accommodations and discrimination and also allow for transition of students from the IEP to "reasonable accommodations."

K-12 Focus: Special Education
Topics of presentation and discussion include transition plans, manifestation determinations, discipline, pre-determination of programs, and recent court decisions. Learn the differences between public and private/charter schools and discuss anticipated trends.

11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch: included in the registration fee. Take this opportunity to collaborate and discuss legal issues that are important to your school. Table tents with questions will be provided to assist with your collaboration and networking, and volunteers will circulate to facilitate discussion and help you get the most out of your time with us.

1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Session Three: Concurrent Presentations
Higher Education Focus: the Speech Rights of College & University Employees and Students
This session includes a review of speech rights, including online postings and a discussion of discipline, as well as academic freedom and retaliation.

K-12 Focus: Employment Issues
As budgets continue to be reduced, employment issues become more prevalent as schools look for ways to save money. These presentations include information related to tenure, retention, discipline, dismissal, teacher evaluations, and discrimination.

2:30 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Session Four: Concurrent Presentations on Liability Issues
Higher Education Focus: Liability
In addition to what has been presented and discussed in the earlier sessions, higher education shows recent legal trends of liability of employees and school officials. Discussion includes what bullying, hazing, and other harassment legislation and court cases mean in terms of liability. This session explores these areas and encourages discussion of varying facts and potential outcomes.

K-12 Focus: Liability
This session addresses K-12 education the recent legal trends of liability of public school employees, officials, and school boards, and explores what new bullying and harassment legislation and court cases mean in terms of liability. In addition, attendees learn the importance of the right kind of personal and school board liability insurance. This session explores these areas and encourages discussion of varying facts and potential outcomes.
